Differences Between MAYBELLINE Mascaras

For those of you who've wondered what's the difference between the products like I did.

my first ever mascara was one from missha, i bought it when i was 16, trying to prepare for my up coming prom dinner. i wish i knew more about make up back then, but hey, everything is a learning journey in itself! every little piece of experience i share with the products i've used along the way help me find out what to look out for when searching for specific needs.

sadly, the missha mascara (i don't even remember what name it's called) turned me into a panda. i probably have another brief encounter with a second mascara, fiberwig by dejavu, which also failed horribly for me (it just can't hold a curl for me! and it also melts and smudges!) from that day onwards, i figured i MUST use waterproof mascara.

one must recall that all these happened about a decade ago. beauty reviews/blogs were rare, and as an unsuspecting teenage consumer, i practically believed the ads when i saw maybelline market their hypercurl cat eyes mascara - which was my holy grail back then simply because it performed so much better than my first. you know what, i bought it for two reasons. it is waterproof, which suits my only need at that time, also, it has a beautiful zebra pattern printed on the tube in a coat of blazing pink chrome paint. animal prints won me over.

click on image to read my review and swatch of the mascara!

it's all about relativity. my first mascara sucked - it didn't do nothing for my lashes, can't hold a curl, and SMUDGES!? the maybelline mascara managed to hold curls, ALL DAY LONG. no smudging, no melting. and i really experienced the volumizing effects because i still remember the first time i put it on, i couldn't get used to seeing some dark blurry shadows when i open my eyes. oh hi, lashes! these days, i'll expect all these qualities from a normal mascara, so this makes the maybelline mascara really normal in today's definition. but like i said, relativity made it seem magical.

ever since then, maybelline has been my go to brand for mascara. well, at least for the first few years after i started wearing make up. i've only started to experiment with other brands in the recent years, so prior to my beauty blog phase, i'm an exclusive maybelline mascara bit*h. :P

i'm still thankful i didn't think too much back then before buying the mascara. if i knew maybelline has such a huge variety of products, i would have ended up not buying any because i simply can't decide which one i want.

today, i thought i'll try to pass it forward, especially for makeup beginners. i found this wonderful comparison chart from maybelline japan, so i translated it into english for your easy reference. it sort of summarizes the main claims and effect of the different mascara. hopefully, this will help you decide which one suits your needs the most?

but honestly, i realize a lot of the different lines appear to be the same products thrown into different packaging. the selection offered in the asia region is still quite understandable, as the products managed to differentiate themselves marginally. i took a look at maybelline USA's mascara selection and let's just say.. the dilemma of choice is real. don't believe me? take a look for yourself.

there are two main lines for two specific needs - volum' express for volume, and the other is for length (which doesn't have a specific name).

VOLUME TYPE MASCARA

maybelline big eyes rocket magnum falsies comparison differences
maybelline volumizing mascara comparison chart. click to enlarge!

i've tried the volum' express hypercurl cat eyes mascara, and the falsies everlasting (also called the false lash everlasting mascara in japan) mascara. purchased the magnum cat eyes waterproof mascara (but haven't tried it yet), and feel like trying the rocket mascara next time.

love the cat eyes, not feeling the hype for the falsies (or did i just get a bad tube? twice?).

LENGTH TYPE MASCARA

maybelline lashionista
maybelline lengthening mascara comparison chart. click to enlarge!

the lashionista care plus and lash exte is only available in japan. the former contains safflower oil as the hair care ingredient, while the latter contains vitamin B5 (panthenol) and ceramide R to nourish the lashes. it sounds so fancy schmanzy, i don't know why we don't have these in singapore, or hong kong. :(

i've tried the lashionista mascara and let's just say, i love it under certain circumstances. when i'm not wearing other kinds of make up, i love it to death because it comes off in the shower. however, when i'm wearing full makeup, it's hard to remove with my eye makeup remover.. but one thing is certain, the length that it creates it well loved at all times. you can read my reviews and see my swatches here.

i'm so glad i don't live in the states, because trying to put ALL of maybelline's mascara on a chart depicting their differences and main claims would drive me crazy.

all in all, i love maybelline for their affordable mascara that actually works - lengthens, volumnizes, holds a curl, and doesn't melt or smudge.

p.s. depending on your region, some of these mascaras may or may not be available in your local store. also, they may appear to have a slightly different name.

QUESTION
have you tried any maybelline mascaras? how do you love it?

Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude - Rosy Rebel (Review and Swatch)

Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude - Rosy Rebel NU34s
Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude - Rosy Rebel

a light pastel shade that covered my lips in just one swipe! this would be my favourite if they change one thing..

nude lips really hit me hard for a while after my radar picked them up from american makeup looks. while i love bold and vivid colours on my lips, i also see the beauty in soft nudes.

the maybelline colorsensational so nude collection is a set of milky nude colours. as they are mostly pastel shades, they work best on fair skin. if you're familar with maybelline products, the colorsensational line promises vivid colour payoff, and so far, that's true.

i'm not sure if this product line is still available in singapore. i can't seem to find it on their official website anymore. they are available in japan, but under a different name "water shiny milky so nude"

"brighten up pigments and smoothing essence" printed on the plastic sleeve that wraps the lipstick.

i got it in the shade NU34S rosy rebel. initially, i wanted NU36S because it's closer to the nude that i want - a toned down brownish beige.. but it was out of stock. :( so i picked this shade instead.

there are 4 shades in the collection. honestly, they're all so lovely, it was hard for me to choose.

Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude - Rosy Rebel NU34s
just like the bold matte, none of the product name is actually printed on the outer casing. the holographic effect over the neon pink casing is quite pretty though! the inner plastic casing is the same as the bold matte. this is the first time i'm nitpicking a product for its packaging.

ingredient list! it contains a lot more polymers as compared to the bold matte lipstick, so it's no wonder they have a pretty different feel to it. (hint: i don't really like it)
Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude - Rosy Rebel NU34s

pretty close to the official swatches huh?

Maybelline ColorSensational SoNude NU34S Rosy Rebel (Review and Swatch)

NU34S rosy rebel is a pastel peachy pink. pigmentation is superb, as you can see it pretty much covered my lips entirely with just one layer! it's much redder than what i wanted, but that's okay.

the texture is slightly different from the bold mattes. this glided over my lips easily too, but it has a slightly slick feel to it. they may go on unevenly and requires a few more swipes to even things out.

it does hydrate my lips for the first few hours but that's it.

there is something else i observed - this lipstick seem to be formulated to be long wearing. how so? because it feels exactly the same as the revlon ultimate suede lipsticks, AND I HATE THAT! if you've used the latter, you'd know the lipstick will set and form a film over your lips. a very uncomfortable plastic film that reminds me of its presence on my lips every single time i speak or do something. on the bright side, it does cling onto my skin throughout the entire day. there was one time when i applied this lipstick on in the morning, then i went out and forgot to bring the lipstick with me so there's no way i can reapply it. i tried removing it with my tissue but it just won't work. at the end of the day, my lips had patches of the lipstick still on, and my poor lips were totally parched. :(

IMHO

i am pleasantly surprised by the pigmentation, because most pastel products usually end up sheer and thinned out. but not these. they covered my original lip colour in one setting and it definitely could have been my favourite pastel lipstick if not for the fact that it sets into that yucky plastic film. it makes smacking my lips hard, and i become self conscious about smacking my lips because i know i'll risk bunching the products together (my experience with the revlon ultimate suede. it was so sticky!!!).

to maybelline, you did a good job on the pigments, but the formulation could have been better. i'd rather it do without that "long wear" thing. i don't mind reapplying my lipsticks at all! i have to, because no lipstick can provide me with hydration for a straight 8 hours anyway.

if you love revlon's ultimate suede, these may be the thing for you. it's just not my cup of tea.

it's kind of a blessing in disguise that the NU36S was out of stock, because now i can continue my hunt for that colour. i'm looking at the loreal color riche because i love the formulation to death.

i purchased this lipstick for SGD$17.90 when it was having a one for one promotion.

Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte - Cheeky Coral (Swatch and Review)

Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte - Cheeky Coral Review
Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte - Cheeky Coral

a pigmented, vivid lipstick that glides over my lips like butter? and it's (semi)matte!?

off the official website, maybelline has positioned this lipstick to be a matte lipstick that delivers vibrant and vivid colours. does it live up to the claims?

the lipstick series and names are printed on a plastic sleeve, not on the case itself. seems to be infused with honey for better hydration.

i got it in the colour MAT3, cheek coral.

there are 5 colours available in singapore, this is the only orange shade and definitely doesn't look coral to me.

ingredients list. the lipstick is infused with hydrating components, albeit in small quantities as they appear to be at the bottom of the list.

Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte - Cheeky Coral
once i removed the plastic sleeve, it reveals the matte plastic cover and a metallic looking (but also plastic) lipstick container. i'm kind of bummed out that the inner case isn't made of metal.

Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte - Cheeky Coral

Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte MAT3 Cheeky Coral swatch

official swatches from maybelline

MAT3 cheek coral is a bright orange on me. you'll get better colour payoff with at least 2 layers of the product as you can see from the swatches. compare it to the official swatch online and you'll notice the online swatches is way off.

the finish isn't totally matte though! it still retains a little sheen to it, but definitely not as glossy as a lip gloss would be. the lipstick is pretty lightweight, i don't feel much on my lips upon application. the texture is slightly different when compared to the revlon super lustrous matte lipstick. this feels more airy and bouncy, while the latter feels a little more skin hugging. don't get me wrong, i don't mean that the maybelline lipstick feels heavy, i just mean the pigments tend to glide over each other more easily (and hence lesser tugging). think massaging a whipped cream versus a solid shea butter over your skin. get the idea?

the lipstick glides over my lips very smoothly and easily, maybelline did a good job with the formula as the lipstick was really a breeze to use. no tugging at all! and it also feels hydrating, which is something i don't usually expect from a matte lipstick.

IMHO

i am really surprised by the colour payoff when swatching these at the drugstore. on my hands, one swipe is enough to showcase their full pigmentation. ditching the marketing claims, the formula is indeed quite hydrating. however, i do need to apply a lip balm throughout the day. at least it's more hydrating than the revlon matte lipstick!

the formula is not long wearing, but it does stay on my quite well until i decide to eat or drink. i don't remember having too much transfers or staining when i drink from a glass after the lipstick has dried out a little, i quite like that!

overall, i really like the formula of this lipstick! it's my first time trying out maybelline's lipstick actually! i'd buy more if they ever change the material of the inner casing from plastic to metal. i like to feel more weight to my lipsticks!

i purchased this from watsons for $17.90 when it was having a buy one get one free promotion!

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara VS Dolly Wink Long Mascara

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara VS Dolly Wink Long Mascara
Maybelline Lashionista Mascara VS Dolly Wink Long Mascara

my first ever film type mascara was the deja vu fiberwig mascara and it disappointed me. but that didn't stop me from trying more film type formulas.

film type mascaras are water and oil resistant, as far as the formula in the past few years goes.. i can't say the same for fiberwig from a decade ago! they are easy to remove in the shower as they can easily come off with warm water. they form little "caps" of black polymer that will just trickle down your drain after some gentle rubbing.

i'm comparing the maybelline lashionista mascara in black to the dollywink long mascara, also in black.

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara VS Dolly Wink Long Mascara

similarities:
1. both create very natural lengths (seems to have similar lengthening powers)
2. both straighten my curled lashes
3. both last me throughout the entire day, no panda eyes!
4. both are able to hold curls IF i use a heated lash curler after application, and they do not melt or stain the heated lash curler!

differences:
1. dollywink has a wetter formula and tend to group my lashes together, whereas the maybelline is of a drier formula, giving me a one by one look.
2. dollywink has a fatter brush than the maybelline.
3. maybelline is able to go up to 5 coats without looking unnatural, while dollywink may look a little spidery.
4. maybelline may be a few dollars cheaper than dollywink.
5. maybelline's formula feels more light weight.

that's all for a simple comparison! if you were to ask me which do i prefer, i'd go with the maybelline. even though both will straighten my curled lashes, the lightweight formula of the maybelline means i can keep going on and on to build a layer of fibers, and then using my fingers i can push these fibers upwards and they'll hold the curl just fine. they'll probably need some "reassurance" throughout the day to keep them perked up, but i couldn't achieve that with the dollywink because it's formula is just too wet. i did try to remove most of the excess mascara on the wand, but it's just a little troublesome.

for a more dolly look, i'd go for the dollywink since the brush bunch up my lashes together. for a really natural "i don't have any mascara on" look, i'd choose maybelline.

the full review of the individual mascaras are linked above! check them out if you want more details.

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl (Swatch and review)

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl 02 Light Peacock Green and 05 Snow White

august was the month i bought so many new eyeliners. i picked these up when watsons was having a one for one sale for these babies. it's a good chance for me to pick up a while eyeliner for future looks that i'll be doing!

i just realize i can't find any information from its official websites. i did some snooping around e-retailers online and found some of the "claims" these eyeliners have.

creamy, budge proof, long wear, ultra bright colours. we'll see.

the cap is indicative of the shade and finish of the product.

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
02 light peacock green and 05 snow white.

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
each pen contains 0.3g of product, it's about 3.2cm long.

it contains the following ingredient. this is for the peacock green in specific.
yup, it's made in china.

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
swatch over powder foundation. one swipe for the white, multiple swipes for the green.

05 snow white is a matte white.
02 light peacock green changes colour at different angles. from the front it look like a metallic greenish-turquoise-ish colour. this shade tend to go on light, so a few swipes is required.

both are creamy and glides on the back of my hand easily.

light peacock green takes on a bluish hue when viewed at an angle. see below!

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
when viewed at different angles, peacock green actually looks more bluish. BEAUTIFUL!

Maybelline ColorShow Crayon Kohl snow white light peacock green
vaseline test:

they were pretty budge proof on clean skin, and i'd say they performed pretty well in vaseline too, but they're not as resistant as the makeon and solone eyeliner for sure.

IMHO:

i can only attest for their creaminess for they are really pretty damn creamy. so creamy that if i went a few more layers on my eyes, it starts to deposit stuff unevenly. after it sets the uneven pieces turn hard. if it drops into your eyes unfortunately, it's gonna irritate a little.

i've tried both of them on my lids and on my water line. i actually bought the white for lining my lower water line specifically, but the staying power there isn't very optimal. however, it stayed pretty well on my eyelids.

to elaborate on how snow white felt on my lower lid, it wasn't pleasant. the lead is pretty soft, the products deposited isn't even. it will dry up into hard little bits that eventually goes into my eyes and irritate the hell out of me. :( needless to say, with all that extra tear being generated from that irritation, the waterline is washed clean within half an hour.

i was very impressed by how budge proof they were when i tried them out in watson's. the green is a really pretty shade, i don't see this colour often! it'll make a good "point colour" for some fun :D

sadly, even though the white is really pigmented, it doesn't stay that well on my waterline, once again. what's new? still haven't found that eyeliner that stays on well enough for more than a few hours. can't have it all!

i bought this for $7.90 (for 2) when watson's was having a one-for-one sale.

Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black (Swatch and Review)

Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black
Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black (Swatch and Review)

i forgot where and why i picked this up. probably decided it's about time i start using a black gel liner because i THINK i've mastered how to draw the perfect eyeliner, well, at least maneuver it with a certain dexterity.

after using the maybelline creamy gel eyeliner with such success, i picked up this one without giving much thought thinking that it'll be as good as that.

somehow, it didn't work as great on me as compared to the brown one. i'm not sure if they changed the formula, or if the black just happens to be a little more smudgy.

Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black
it also comes with an eyeliner brush! i actually utilize it a lot.

not only did they change the packaging, they also changed the product name. it used to be called the eye studio creamy gel liner.

Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black
in the tub: i've dug a hole!

this black one seem to dry out a little faster than the brown one. it's becoming difficult to get products out. :( it's only been what, a year???

Mayelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 01 Black Swatch
swatched on bare skin, comparison with the maybelline creamy gel liner in brown.

01 black is a matte black, it's very pigmented and goes on amazingly well when it's fresh off the tub. it tugs a little right now.

IMHO:

the wear time i get out of this black gel liner is about 8-9 hours over eyeshadows. it's actually pretty decent!

i tried wearing it alone and it was a disaster. it's waterproof but not very oil resistant, so wearing this eyeliner alone for the entire day in singapore's heat is not recommended. it actually stay on pretty well on my eyelids. it's the waterline that will melt off and migrate to my lower lash line. it becomes very obvious if i don't have some darker colours there as well.

the colour is jet black so it's very easy to achieve that intense black look. i'm really glad that it's matte because that's exactly what i need.

i've done vaseline test on all my eyeliners before. this comes off almost immediately upon massaging the vaseline in. i'm not surprised what will happen if oils from my eyes soak into the eyeliner for the entier day. HELLO PANDA.

will i repurchase this? nope. i'll be in search of a better eyeliner that is more oil resistant. i have liquid eyeliners that can do that job, but like i said, i use up tons of eyeliners and gel liner pots are more economical for me.

i've owned this eyeliner for about a year, the surface is slightly hardened and i'm not surprised, but what amused me was after i scraped off some of the hardened surface, what's underneath is still pretty creamy! i guess this is an eyeliner i can actually finish without having to throw it out before i empties!

i can't recall where i bought this from and how much i paid for it.

IN A NUTSHELL
1. matte black and very very black
2. creamy when fresh
3. doesn't dry out too much over time
4. not very oil resistant
5. wears on me perfectly in an airconditioned place
6. melts and smudges slightly in outdoor setting

Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR

Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR-1 (Swatch and Review)
Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR-1 (Swatch and Review)

there's a little story to this eyeliner. i was actually eyeing the colorshow eyeliner in beige a few months ago. my dad was going to come back from hong kong so i asked if he can pick up a few items for me. sadly, there isn't colorshow eyeliners in hongkong! so my old man picked this one for me instead. he didn't know i already have a brown eyeliner.

AWWWWWW. sweetest dad award.

back to the review, since i got this unexpectedly, i didn't have any expectations for it. but i must say it worked pretty well.

Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR-1 (Swatch and Review)
it has a twist up mechanism so you don't need to sharpen the pencil. there are 0.3g of product.

swatched over powder foundation.

BR-1 is a matte dark brown, it reminds me of dark chocolate or espresso.

Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR-1 (Swatch and Review)
compared with the lancome kohl eyeliner in black (right).

Maybelline Masterliner Cream Pencil BR-1 (Swatch and Review)
compared with the maybelline eye studio creamy gel liner 02 brown (right)

the masterliner is more black than the gel liner (which is more red). so yea, the masterliner is indeed a dark chocolate shade!

IMHO:

on the packaging, the eyeliner claims to be creamy. it felt really creamy on the back of my hands, but it actually tugs my eyelids usually.

the lead is rather hard, but soft enough to deposit products. however, you can see uneven product distribution on my hand and it doesn't glide that smoothly on my eyelids. i have to go over several times to get enough products on my lids, and most of the time they end up building up a little too quickly which results in little bits and pieces of eyeliner falling off my eyes.

the product will harden over time, so i usually draw on a piece of tissue paper to get rid of any hardened bits so that the application will become smoother. it helps in that aspect! and i realize after i do that the application improves!

the colour is pretty pigmented on my eyes, i love using it when i'm in a rush because of the harder lead. this prevent me from getting too much product on my eyes at any one time. this characteristic also makes it awesome for lining my water line and filling in my lash line as an overly soft lead will deposit way too much products (and transfer to my lower lids before it sets).

i also love using it on my inner corners because it's easier to control as compared to a liquid liner, also, the rounded tip let me fake a rounded inner corner :D

on to the most important point - the eyeliner last really well on my eyelids. i'm comparing this to the gel liner, perhaps the relatively drier formula help sit stay longer! it wore for a few hours on my waterline before disappearing into my tear ducts. good job! hahaha!

my dad bought this for me in HK for HKD$90 i think?

IN A NUTSHELL:
1. pigmented, but not as creamy on my lids
2. very long lasting on the upper lid (lasted me the entire day without smudging or fading)
3. stays on my waterline for 2-3 hours
4. tip tends to harden over time, it's best to draw over tissue before using it to get rid of that layer

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)
Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)

this is my second tub of gel liner. the first being my kate gel liner (hahaha told you i'm a kate fan girl). i figured very early on in my makeup journey that i'll use a lot of eyeliner, that's why i invested in these gel liner pots instead. also, a few years ago there wasn't any gel liner pencils in the market yet.

maybelline gel eyeliner was constantly within the top 5 of the cosme ranking at the moment in time, i figured i had nothing to lose to try it. it was very affordable, i remember i got it for about SGD$16.

i got brown because i was a beginner in make up last time, brown seems forgiving even if i can't draw a perfect line, plus i can always blend it out with my eyeshadow if all else fails :P

this is probably yet another antique in my makeup collection. you don't see this packaging anymore as they've recently changed the packaging (and i highly suspect they changed the formula as well).

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)
it comes with a pretty awesome eyeliner brush, while it's not the finest and flattest, i managed to make it work for me.

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)
in the tub: i'm almost touching "pan" on this! almost!!! just another year to go maybe?

surprisingly, the product is still creamy (although not as creamy as it once used to be) after so many years. *counting fingers* i owned this for a good 3-4 years i think? nope, it didn't dry out. SURPRISE SURPRISE! it's a little dryer i must admit, but still useable because it is still kinda waxy (as opposed to turning rock hard).

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)
swatched on bare skin.

02 brown is a reddish brown with some tiny sparkles in it. it gives it a slight metallic finish. just a slliiiggghhhhtttt one.

Maybelline Eye Studio Creamy Gel Liner 02 Brown (Swatch and Review)
photo taken in natural light (left) and under camera flash (right).

you can see the slight reflectivity in flash.

IMHO:

i've tried the newer version of the gel liner in black, i honestly think the old formula is better. this eyeliner stays on my eyelids for the entire day without smudging even without eyeshadow on. i can't say the same for the black (newer formula) one.

they don't stay as well on my water line, but that's almost every other eyeliner. it's okay, as long as they remain in between my lash roots.

initially i didn't quite like the slight metallic finish because it made my eyes appear a little puffy. when coupled with metallic brown eyeshadows, the eyeliner can look pretty invisible because it is also reflective, which kind of defeated the purpose of wearing an eyeliner in the first place (to frame my eyes).

with that said, it's a pretty natural shade to have, and i am absolutely in love with its formula. the fact that i can still use it after so many years is a very pleasant surprise to me.

as for the brush, i realize i can flatten it by swiping on the edge of the tub to get a more precise line later on. i've demonstrated it in one of my videos, it's just a small snippet but you get the idea!

i purchased this many years ago for about SGD$16.

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara (Swatches and Review)

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara Swatches and Review
Maybelline Lashionista Mascara (Swatches and Review)

another lengthening mascara! this time it's a film type lengthening mascara from maybelline. i heard how it's able to create endless length (without clumping) so i got it when i saw it on sale just to try it out. this mascara contains fibres, but what's so special about it is the lightweight formula.

i believe this mascara is only available in asian countries, as the american maybelline website didn't have any information on this. i found it on the japanese website though.

i can't really read too much japanese, but it claims to create "long upward" lashes, thanks to the formula!

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara
i picked up the mascara in black.

THE BRUSH__________________________________________________________________

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara
the brush has a spoon shape (but they didn't call it the spoon brush on the website). apparently the brush design is made to fit the japanese (they called it a "just fit brush") population! i don't know about that.

the tip of the brush has shorter bristles, so it's easiest to get more product from the tip of the brush than from the other end, where the bristles are longer.

according to the instructions, you're supposed to use the concave part against your lashes.

visible fibres on the brush. maybelline claims that they're 4mm. a micrometer, anyone?

THE BEFORE AND AFTER______________________________________________________

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara Before and After
naked lashes vs 1 coat vs 2 coats vs 3 coats, lashes curled prior to mascara application.

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara Before and After
comparison with eyes opened.

Maybelline Lashionista Mascara
see my lashes grow!

five freaking coats of mascara later - lashes still looks natural (NOT spidery or clumpy), but much more visible and longer. note: lash was not curled prior to application.

THE CAPABILITIES___________________________________________________________

the lengthening power is pretty amazing, because it really does live up to the claims of "endless length". i don't usually go over 2 coats because beyond that as there's a clumping alert (even if i were to layer it on before the previous coats dries out compeltely). but this mascara never clumps, i can keep going on if i want to. from the gif you can see that it lengthens the most in the first coat. the subsequent ones starts to add a little more volume to the lashes than length.

my lashes are still soft even after 5 coats.

as the brush does a good job at separating the lashes and coating them fully. my lashes actually look like they're one-by-one even after the 3 coats.

even though i forgot to curl my lashes before taking the "before" photo, i curled it right before i applied my mascara. my experience with it is this - the mascara will straighten any curls that i achieve with the lash curler. BUT, if i push my lashes upwards with my finger, they actually stay in place and becomes curled! of course, it doesn't stay that way too long, but i'm quite amused by the fact that it does that. i think it's partly because half of my new found lashes are actually fibres, and since they are so lightweight, they are able to hold a curl just by me pushing them. if you look at the photo of me wearing 5 coats of mascara, you can see that curl in effect as i didn't curl my lashes before that. by brushing the mascara in an upward motion, it deposits fibres and build it upwards too. i think that's what helped it create this 'curl', and i assure you, whatever curled part you see are actually fibres.

as this is a film type mascara, it washes off in the shower with warm water. it does come off when i use an eye makeup remover, but that will take some rubbing, whereas in the shower, it's almost effortless.

the first film type mascara i used was deja vu's fiberwig and that little thing melted off my eyes. lashionista DID NOT MELT!!! WOOHOO!

IMHO:
what i love most about this mascara is that it doesn't clump even after many layers, which is essentially the key to getting really long lashes with any fibre type mascara. i feel that the draw back for most lengthening formula is the threat of clumping from the repeated layers of mascara being applied, since the fibres are built by layering them upon each other. this mascara solved that problem for me. i can go 5 layers with this mascara and my lashes still look natural (instead of spidery).

the only thing i didn't quite like is that it straightens my curled lashes. yes, i can push it with my fingers to point it upwards, but i like strong curls. however, i don't mean that it creates a kink. there is a curl, just a very smooth one that looks extremely natural. i just prefer stronger curls especially when i have eye makeup on.

in fact, the first few times i wore this, i really feel like they look so natural to the point that they look like my own lashes. this departs a little from majolica majorca's lash expander frame plus, because that mascara don't give me this kind of smooth curl. i like that i'm able to control the impact of this mascara by controlling how many layers i wear. usually i wear 2 coats for no makeup days just to lengthen it a bit, and when i want to go gungho, i go for 3 coats, very seldom 4. but now i'm wearing 5 coats (because i'm curious just how many layers it can go before it starts to clump) and it still looks great as hell.

i can see why this mascara rose to be the best selling mascara (in japan). the natural length it creates is really like no other. but it does take a bit of patience if you want really long lashes, just keep in mind that there's really no limit when you're using this mascara :)

IN A NUTSHELL
this mascara is good for you if you want
1) natural looking lashes that are long and light weight
2) a mascara that doesn't melt in the heat
3) natural curl
4) your mascara to come off in the shower

i would really recommend this mascara to people who already have full (or semi full) lashes to begin with. if you have very sparse lashes, it'd be better to use a set of natural falsies and build this mascara on top of it if you desire more length.

i bought this for SGD$15 when it was on sale in watsons.
